Bacon cooks well in an air fryer because the fat drips away from the strips. The catch is hot grease in the drawer, which can smoke.
The fan and the open basket make crisp bacon with less splatter than a pan. The grease falls into the drawer underneath, and that is where the problems start. Hot, pooled fat smokes, and old grease left on the element or drawer is a fire risk.
| Short answer | Yes |
|---|---|
| Typical settings | Around 350 to 400 F for about 8 to 12 minutes, depending on thickness and model |
| Layout | Single layer, strips not overlapping |
| Grease | Empty the drawer partway through if it builds up |
| Cleaning | Wash the drawer and basket after every batch |
How to cook bacon in an air fryer
- Lay the strips in a single layer, cutting them in half if they are long.
- Cook at the lower end of the range and check at about eight minutes.
- If grease is pooling in the drawer, pour it out carefully into a heat-safe container.
- Flip once if your model heats unevenly, then cook to your preferred crispness.
- Drain on paper towels and wash the drawer straight away.
What happens when you get it wrong
- Smoke. Pooled grease at a high temperature smokes, and the smell spreads through the kitchen.
- Grease buildup. Layers of old fat on the drawer or element can smoke or ignite. Keep it clean.
- Strips curl into the element. Short, light strips can be lifted by the fan. Cut them to fit and lay them flat.
A sheet pan in the oven for a large batch, which handles the grease easily.
Microwave bacon between paper towels for one or two strips. See the paper towel page for the caution.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to flip bacon in an air fryer?
Often once halfway, but many models cook it evenly without. Check yours the first time.
How do you stop bacon smoking in an air fryer?
Lower the temperature slightly, drain the grease and keep the drawer clean. Some people add a little water to the drawer as a common tip, but it is not a manufacturer instruction.
Can you cook bacon and eggs together in an air fryer?
Not in the same basket. The grease flows onto the eggs. Use a divider or cook them separately.
Can you save the bacon grease?
Many cooks do. Strain it and keep it in the refrigerator rather than leaving it out.
