Cooked chicken freezes well. Cool it quickly, pack it airtight and reheat it to 165 F.
The USDA says food kept frozen at 0 F is safe indefinitely, and the time limit is about quality. For cooked chicken the best quality is a few months, and pieces covered in broth or gravy keep their quality longer than plain ones. Speed matters at the front end: cooked chicken should be refrigerated or frozen within two hours.

How to freeze cooked chicken
- Cool the chicken, and get it into the refrigerator or freezer within two hours of cooking.
- Cut or shred it into portions you will use at once.
- Pack it in freezer bags with the air pressed out, or in airtight containers.
- Label with the date and freeze flat.
- Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter, and reheat to 165 F.
What happens when you get it wrong
- Bacteria. Chicken left out too long before freezing can carry growth that freezing does not undo.
- Freezer burn. Air exposure dries the meat and gives it a leathery texture.
- Thawing on the counter. The outside warms into the danger zone while the middle is still frozen.
Freeze it in stock or sauce, which protects the meat from drying out.
Freeze raw chicken instead if you have not cooked it yet, for the same safety rules.
