Can You Microwave Paper Plates?

Plain ones yes

Plain white paper plates are fine for short reheating. The ones to avoid have shiny coatings, printed patterns or metallic rims, and none of them should run empty.

Paper itself is transparent to microwaves and does not heat up, which is why plain paper is fine. The complications are the coatings. Many disposable plates are lined with a thin plastic film for grease resistance, and some decorative plates use metallic inks that spark.

Using them sensibly

  1. Use plain, uncoated plates with no print in the eating area.
  2. Keep heating times short, a minute or two rather than ten.
  3. Put the plate on the turntable rather than on another dish, so heat is not trapped.
  4. Support it with a hand underneath when lifting, because wet paper folds.
  5. Never run one empty, which is true of anything in a microwave.

What happens when you get it wrong

  • Sparking. Metallic ink or a foil rim arcs just like foil does.
  • A soft, collapsing plate. Grease and steam soak through, and the plate gives way when you lift it.
  • Melted coating. Glossy plates have a thin plastic layer that can soften into the food.
  • Scorching. Long cooking times with little moisture can brown or burn the paper.
Use this instead

A ceramic plate, which costs nothing per use and never collapses.

If you want disposable, plain unbleached paper plates are the safest of the options.

Frequently asked questions

Can you microwave paper plates?

Plain, uncoated paper plates are generally fine for short reheating. Avoid plates with glossy coatings, printed designs or metallic rims, and never run one empty.

Why did my paper plate spark in the microwave?

Metallic ink or a foil-trimmed rim. Both reflect microwaves and arc exactly like aluminium foil.

Are coated paper plates safe?

Less so. The gloss is usually a thin plastic film, which can soften with hot or oily food. Plain plates are the better choice.

Can paper catch fire in a microwave?

With long heating and little moisture, yes, paper can scorch and ignite. Short reheats with food on the plate are low risk.

Are paper towels safe in a microwave?

Plain white paper towel is commonly used to cover food and is generally fine for short periods. Avoid printed or recycled towel, and never run it dry for long.
