Can You Put an Air Fryer Basket in the Dishwasher?

Usually yes, but it shortens its life

Most manufacturers say the basket is dishwasher safe. Most also recommend hand washing, because detergent and heat wear the non-stick coating faster than anything you do while cooking.

An air fryer basket is a non-stick pan with holes in it, and it has the same problem every non-stick pan has. The label is about survival, not longevity. Baked-on grease makes people reach for the dishwasher, but there is a faster method that does not cost you the coating.

Label usually saysDishwasher safe, top rack
Manual usually addsHand washing recommended
Damage over timeDull coating, food starting to stick, pitted aluminium
Never useSteel wool, powder cleanser, the scouring side of a sponge
Fast methodSoak in hot soapy water for ten minutes, soft brush, done

The ten minute method that works

  1. Let the basket cool. Cold water on hot metal warps it.
  2. Fill it with hot water and a squirt of dish soap and leave it ten minutes while you eat.
  3. Wipe with a soft sponge or a soft brush. Grease that looked welded on lifts off.
  4. For burnt-on residue, make a paste of baking soda and water, leave it fifteen minutes, then wipe.
  5. Dry it fully before it goes back in the machine, especially around the rim.

What happens when you get it wrong

  • The coating goes matt. Food starts sticking long before anything peels.
  • Aluminium dulls and pits. Detergent is hard on bare aluminium, which is what most baskets are underneath.
  • The handle loosens. Repeated heat and water cycles work on the joint.
  • Crumbs in the machine. Perforated baskets shed burnt bits all over your clean dishes.
Use this instead

Hot soapy soak and a soft brush, which takes less effort than loading the dishwasher.

If the coating is already failing, replacement baskets are sold separately for most popular models and cost far less than a new machine.

Frequently asked questions

Are air fryer baskets dishwasher safe?

Most are labelled dishwasher safe, but nearly every manual also recommends hand washing. The dishwasher will not destroy it immediately, it simply wears the non-stick coating out much faster.

How do you clean baked-on grease from an air fryer basket?

Soak it in hot soapy water for ten minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge. For stubborn residue use a paste of baking soda and water, left on for fifteen minutes.

Can you use steel wool on an air fryer basket?

No. It strips the coating immediately, which is exactly the damage you are trying to avoid. Use a soft brush.

Why does food stick to my air fryer basket now?

The non-stick coating has worn, usually from dishwasher cycles, abrasive cleaning or aerosol cooking sprays. Replacement baskets are available for most models.

Should you wash the drawer as well as the basket?

Yes. Fat collects in the drawer underneath and burns there, which is the source of most air fryer smoke and smells.
