Parchment is safe and it is the liner most air fryer manuals actually recommend. The rule is the same as foil: food on top, never empty, never during preheat.
Parchment is rated well above air fryer temperatures, so heat is not the issue. Weight is. An empty sheet in a running basket gets lifted straight into the element, and parchment burns a lot more enthusiastically than foil does.
| Short answer | Safe, and better than foil |
|---|---|
| Heat rating | Most parchment is rated to about 425F, above typical air fryer use |
| Main risk | An empty sheet blowing into the element |
| Buy this kind | Perforated rounds sized for your basket |
| Never do this | Preheat with it, or use a sheet bigger than the basket floor |
How to use it
- Cut or buy a round smaller than the basket floor.
- Put the food on it before it goes anywhere near the machine.
- Use perforated parchment so the air still moves through.
- Add it after preheating, never before.
- Bin it after one use once it darkens at the edges.
What happens when you get it wrong
- Empty parchment in a hot basket. It lifts, hits the element and catches. This is the only real danger and it is entirely avoidable.
- Solid parchment with no holes. Blocks the airflow, so food steams instead of crisping and fat has nowhere to drain.
- Wax paper by mistake. Wax paper is not parchment. The coating melts and smokes at air fryer temperatures.
- Oversized sheets. Edges that climb the basket wall end up near the element.
Perforated parchment rounds cost almost nothing and are sized to common basket shapes.
A silicone liner is the reusable version, and it will not blow around because it has weight to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put parchment paper in an air fryer?
Yes. Parchment is rated above normal air fryer temperatures and most manuals recommend it over foil. Put food on top of it, never run it empty, and never use it during preheat.
Will parchment paper catch fire in an air fryer?
Only when it is loose. An empty sheet gets lifted by the fan into the heating element, which is hot enough to ignite it. Weighted down by food, it does not move.
Do you need holes in air fryer parchment?
Yes, ideally. Perforated parchment lets air move through the basket, which is how an air fryer cooks. Solid parchment traps fat underneath and gives you softer, greasier results.
Can you use wax paper instead?
No. Wax paper has a coating that melts and smokes well below air fryer temperatures. Parchment and wax paper look similar and behave completely differently.
Can you reuse air fryer parchment?
Once or twice at most, and not after it has darkened or crisped at the edges. Browned parchment is closer to catching than fresh parchment.
