No plastic belongs in an air fryer. Takeout containers, microwave tubs and plastic-handled dishes all soften, warp or melt well below the temperatures these machines run at.
An air fryer sits between 350F and 400F for most cooking. Common food plastics start deforming between 150F and 250F. There is no overlap, which makes this one of the few questions on this site with a flat answer.
| Short answer | Never |
|---|---|
| Why | Air fryers run 350F to 400F, food plastic softens from about 150F |
| Includes | Takeout tubs, microwave containers, plastic lids, plastic handles |
| Risk | Melted plastic on the element, fumes, ruined basket |
| Exception | None worth the risk |
What happens when you get it wrong
- It melts onto the basket. Hardened plastic on a non-stick coating usually means a new basket.
- It melts onto the element. Worse, because it burns there every time you cook from then on.
- Fumes. Burning plastic releases fumes you should not be breathing in a closed kitchen, and the smell stays in the machine.
- Warped containers. Even plastic that does not fully melt will deform enough to be useless afterwards.
Metal, foil trays, oven-safe ceramic or borosilicate glass, or purpose-made silicone.
Silicone liners handle air fryer heat easily and are the closest thing to a plastic substitute.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put plastic in an air fryer?
No. Air fryers run at 350F to 400F and common food plastics begin softening at around 150F. Everything from takeout tubs to plastic lids will warp, melt or give off fumes.
Are microwave-safe containers air fryer safe?
No. Microwave safe means the plastic will not melt from a brief burst of microwave energy in a cool oven. An air fryer applies direct, sustained heat, which is a completely different test.
What happens if plastic melts in an air fryer?
It fuses to the basket or the heating element, releases fumes and leaves a smell that returns every time you use the machine. Melted plastic on a non-stick basket usually ends that basket.
Is silicone the same as plastic?
No. Food grade silicone is stable at air fryer temperatures and is sold specifically as air fryer liners and moulds. It is the correct substitute.
Can you put a plastic plate in an air fryer to reheat food?
No. Use a metal tray, a foil tray or oven-safe ceramic instead. Nothing described as plastic belongs in there.
