Silicone is one of the few things in your kitchen that genuinely does not care. It handles the heat, the detergent and the spray. The only complaint is that it comes out greasy.
Food grade silicone is stable far beyond dishwasher temperatures, does not react with detergent and does not absorb water. The one real quirk is that it attracts oil, so a silicone spatula can come out of a cycle still feeling slightly slick while everything else is clean.
| Short answer | Yes, top or bottom rack |
|---|---|
| Heat tolerance | Typically rated to 400F or higher, far above any dishwasher |
| Common complaint | A greasy film left after washing |
| Also normal | Picking up smells and food colour over time |
| Watch for | Thin mats folding over and blocking the spray arm |
Getting it properly clean
- Load mats and moulds so they stay open rather than folding onto themselves.
- Keep them clear of the spray arm, since a floppy mat can stop the arm turning.
- For a greasy film, wash with hot water and a little white vinegar, then rinse.
- For stubborn grease, bake silicone bakeware at 350F for ten minutes, then wash. The heat drives the oil out.
- Dry fully before stacking, or the pieces stick together.
What happens when you get it wrong
- A slick film. Oil clings to silicone. Vinegar or a bake cycle fixes it.
- Smells that stay. Garlic and curry linger. Baking at 350F for fifteen minutes removes most of it.
- Staining. Tomato and turmeric tint silicone permanently, which is cosmetic only.
- A blocked spray arm. The main practical issue, caused by large mats flopping over.
Nothing needed. This is one where the dishwasher is genuinely the right answer.
For items that stay greasy, a quick hand wash with vinegar afterwards takes seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Is silicone dishwasher safe?
Yes. Food grade silicone tolerates temperatures far above anything a dishwasher reaches and is unaffected by detergent. It is one of the safest materials to machine wash.
Why is my silicone still greasy after the dishwasher?
Silicone attracts oil. Wash it with hot water and white vinegar, or bake it at 350F for ten minutes and then wash, which drives the oil back out of the surface.
How do you get smells out of silicone?
Bake it at around 350F for fifteen minutes, or soak it in a solution of baking soda and hot water. Both work better than repeated washing.
Does staining mean silicone is ruined?
No. Tomato and spice staining is cosmetic and does not affect how the silicone performs or its safety.
Can silicone go on the bottom rack?
Yes, it handles the heat. Just make sure large mats cannot fold over and block the spray arm.
