Oven-safe borosilicate like Pyrex is fine. Any other glass, including drinking glasses and most storage containers, can crack from the speed of the temperature change.
Air fryers heat fast and blow hot air directly at whatever is inside. That rapid change is what breaks glass, not the final temperature. The term for it is thermal shock, and it is the reason a dish that is perfectly happy in an oven can crack in an air fryer.
| Safe | Borosilicate or tempered oven-safe glass, marked oven safe on the base |
|---|---|
| Not safe | Drinking glasses, jars, storage lids, decorative glass |
| Main risk | Thermal shock cracking, sometimes shattering |
| Never do this | Put cold glass straight from the fridge into a hot basket |
| Watch for | Glass that blocks airflow and leaves food pale on top |
If you are using glass
- Check the base for an oven safe mark. No mark means no.
- Let the dish come to room temperature first. Straight from the fridge into a hot machine is how they break.
- Leave clearance around the dish so air can still circulate.
- Keep it well below the element, and never let it touch the top.
- Expect longer cook times, because glass heats slowly and blocks air.
What happens when you get it wrong
- Thermal shock. Cold glass meeting fast-moving hot air can crack along a line or, occasionally, break apart.
- A pale, soggy top. A tall dish blocks the airflow, so the food bakes rather than crisps.
- Lids. Glass storage lids and seals are rarely oven rated. The seal goes first.
- Dish too close to the element. Direct radiant heat on one spot is exactly the stress that cracks glass.
A small metal cake pan or foil tray does the same job, heats faster and will not shatter.
Silicone baking dishes made for air fryers handle the heat and weigh little.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put Pyrex in an air fryer?
Yes, if it is marked oven safe and it is at room temperature before it goes in. Avoid putting cold Pyrex straight from the fridge into a preheated air fryer, because the rapid temperature change is what cracks glass.
Why did my glass dish crack in the air fryer?
Almost always thermal shock: the glass changed temperature faster than it could handle. A cold dish, a preheated machine and air blowing straight at it is the usual combination.
Can you put a drinking glass in an air fryer?
No. Drinking glasses are not oven rated and are not designed for sudden heat. They are one of the most likely things to break in there.
Does glass work as well as metal in an air fryer?
No. Glass heats slowly and blocks airflow, so food takes longer and browns less. Metal pans and foil trays give better results in a machine that cooks with moving air.
Can you air fry in a glass storage container?
Only if the base is marked oven safe, and never with the lid on. Most storage lids and seals are plastic or silicone rated well below air fryer temperatures.
