Most current Yeti and Stanley tumblers are dishwasher safe and say so on the base. Older vacuum-insulated models are not, and heat can break the seal that makes them work.
An insulated tumbler keeps drinks cold because of a vacuum between two steel walls. If that vacuum fails, the cup becomes an ordinary steel cup overnight. Modern construction handles dishwasher heat; older bottles and some powder-coated finishes do not.
| Check first | The base of the cup, which states dishwasher safe or not |
|---|---|
| Yeti | Current Ramblers and tumblers are dishwasher safe |
| Stanley | Most current Quenchers are dishwasher safe, lids included |
| Not safe | Older vacuum bottles, some painted or wrapped finishes, anything with a sticker-style print |
| Main risks | Seal failure, dulled powder coating, warped plastic lids |
If you are machine washing it
- Take the lid apart. The gasket comes out, and underneath it is where the smell lives.
- Top rack for the lid and any small parts.
- Bottom rack or upside down on the top for the body, where the spray can reach inside.
- Skip the heated dry cycle if your machine allows it.
- Let it air dry fully upside down before putting the lid back on.
What happens when you get it wrong
- The cup stops insulating. Condensation on the outside is the giveaway that the vacuum seal has gone.
- Dull or peeling colour. Powder coating fades with repeat cycles, particularly on older models.
- A warped lid. Plastic lids on the bottom rack sit too close to the element.
- Lingering smell. Almost always the gasket, which traps old coffee and milk if you never remove it.
Hot soapy water with a bottle brush takes a minute and preserves the finish.
For smells, soak with a spoon of baking soda and a splash of vinegar, then rinse well.
Frequently asked questions
Are Yeti cups dishwasher safe?
Current Yeti Ramblers and tumblers are, and the base says so. Older models predate that, so check before assuming.
Are Stanley Quenchers dishwasher safe?
Most current Quenchers are, including the lid and straw. Older Stanley vacuum bottles generally are not.
What happens if you wash a non-dishwasher-safe tumbler?
The heat can compromise the vacuum seal, which permanently ends the insulation. A cup that suddenly sweats on the outside has lost its vacuum.
Why does my tumbler still smell after washing?
The gasket in the lid. Pull it out, wash underneath it, dry it and refit it. Almost every persistent smell in a travel cup is that seal.
Should you use the heated dry cycle?
Avoid it if you can. It is the hottest part of the cycle and does the most damage to coatings, plastic lids and seals.
