Dishwasher detergent dulls the edge, the heat loosens handles, and knives knock against everything else in the basket. Ten seconds at the sink is the whole alternative.
Three separate things damage a knife in a dishwasher, and they are all avoidable. Detergent is abrasive and alkaline, which micro-pits the edge. Sustained heat and moisture swell wooden handles and degrade the adhesive in riveted ones. And knives rattle against other metal, which is what actually rolls an edge over.
| Short answer | Never, including stainless |
|---|---|
| Edge damage | Abrasive detergent plus knocking against other items |
| Handle damage | Wooden handles split, riveted handles loosen |
| Rust risk | High carbon steel will spot within one cycle |
| Correct method | Hot soapy water, wipe along the spine, dry immediately |
How to wash a knife
- Wash it right after use, before anything dries on.
- Hot water, a drop of soap, a cloth or sponge wiped along the blade from spine to edge, never across it.
- Rinse and dry it immediately. Leaving it on the rack is how spotting starts.
- Store it in a block, on a magnetic strip or in a sheath, never loose in a drawer.
- Hone it with a steel every few uses, and have it properly sharpened once or twice a year.
What happens when you get it wrong
- A dull edge. The most common result, and people blame the knife rather than the machine.
- Rust spots. Carbon steel and some stainless alloys spot after a single cycle.
- Loose or cracked handles. Wooden handles swell and split; glued or riveted ones work loose.
- Chips in the edge. Metal on metal in a moving basket chips thin, hard blades.
- A safety problem. Blades pointing up in a basket is how people cut themselves unloading.
Hand wash and dry immediately. For a chef knife this is about ten seconds.
If you insist on the dishwasher for cheap paring knives, lay them flat in the top rack and accept they are disposable.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put knives in the dishwasher?
No. Detergent dulls and pits the edge, the heat loosens handles, and knives knocking against other items chip the blade. Hand washing takes seconds and keeps a good knife sharp for years.
Are stainless steel knives dishwasher safe?
Stainless resists rust better, but the edge still dulls and handles still suffer. Stainless means stains less, not stainless.
What happens to wooden knife handles in the dishwasher?
They absorb water, swell, then shrink as they dry, which splits the wood and loosens the rivets holding the handle to the tang.
Why do knives go dull in the dishwasher?
Partly the alkaline detergent, which micro-pits the fine edge, and partly physical contact with other metal in the basket during the cycle.
How should you store knives?
On a magnetic strip, in a block or in individual sheaths. Loose in a drawer blunts them almost as effectively as a dishwasher does.
